Our Story

Andrew Gikas BDSc, FPFA, FICD, FADI

Dr Andrew Gikas holds a dental degree from the University of Melbourne. He established a well-respected dental practice in Oakleigh servicing the nearby communities and providing long term dental care for his patients for over three decades. Dr Gikas is also an expert with extensive experience and a special interest in oral appliances for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

In addition to his clinical dentistry, Dr Gikas is the Clinic Director at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne Dental Clinic. He is a past Board member and Conference Chair of the Australasian Sleep Association and a member of various committees within the Australian Dental Association having served as Victorian State Branch President (2016-2017) and elected as an Inaugural ADA Board Director in 2023.

Andrew has a passion for oral health and sleep health promotion and is recognised for his contributions to the dental profession and continues to be engaged in clinical research and lecturing. He holds Honorary positions at The University of Melbourne, The Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Institute for Breathing and Sleep (IBAS) at the Austin. He currently Chairs the ASA’s Dental Sleep Medicine (DSM) Fellowship Committee, which has been recently established to recognise dentists who have achieved minimum clinical competencies in DSM. As this certification program was established by a multidisciplinary team of sleep medicine experts, dentists who complete the FDSM will be awarded FDSM post nominals and recognised by our medical colleagues and patients as qualified in the field.

As well as private practice in Melbourne, Dr Gikas is engaged in public practice as a Visiting Medical Officer and DSM Clinic Lead at the Alfred Hospital, where he consults with patients directly referred from the hospitals sleep unit. This clinic also recruits patients for a number of ongoing research projects.
